Lost and Running
so after a long hiatus, the blog is back. this guy at work spends most of his day writing a diary in MS Word, which is so 1989.. so ive ressureccted my blog to show him how modern i am... that being said, blogs are so 2003 =p
ive also decided to sever the link between facebook and this blog cos theres just too many people on facebook.. not all of whom id like to read my blog. especially the ones which i oft bitch about or whatever =p
on a side note, i wrote my first facebook app! if you have nothing better to do, check out the pre-alpha alpha here.
quite a lot of a things have happened since my last post. probably the biggest thing is that ive been "promoted" to our disaster recovery site, which is in an undisclosed location in the middle of the Australian desert. Which of course makes it closer to my house than head office. the pay is heaps more.. but other than that the job is pretty much the same. i might have a chance to get back to HO in a couple of weeks, but im starting to like it out here...
around this time of year i like to write a wrap up post of the previous year.. but im totally just too lazy for that. instead ill write a few small tasks id like to achieve this new year (in order of probability of success).
also i need to get into shape... im so unfit i can barely move anymore. also i feel bloated most of the time. i need to stop eatign carbs after lunch. this year im planning to devise some sort of ridiculous workout regime to get myself into some state of fitness. Im not sure how it will work yet, since both my knees are fskd, and therefore i cant do any running or jumping.
this just in.. the free gym at work opens on Thursday.. so maybe i can do something fitness related with doesnt involve knees..

why do they rock so hard?
man.. ive been so busy this week or so. like as busy as ive ever been, both at work and outside of work. tuesday was the only day this week i was home at a reasonable hour, which means ive been struggling to focus at work. which is mildly bothersome as ive got this project which im basically the project manager and software architect on... and the lead developer.. and the UAT coordinator. gah! =p
but its not that bad really.. its just that no one told me anything. it was like "heres and not even close to complete project.. can u finish it?" and then everyone expected all these things and im like "wtf? why didnt anyone tell me about these other 500 tasks?" i got handed the project about 6 months into it.. and all that was achieved was a 2 page document with dot points of some things that were maybe sorta requirements.
anyhoo..work is boring.. heres some things i did this week:
on monday we had a frisbee dinner thing to fill in for the washed out game (even though i wasnt playing anyway) but the night ended with a very long session of "loitering on a street cnr for no apparent reason other than indecision" which lasted till 2am-ish (on a school night no less).
on wed i saw this Burton movie at Bondi. it was ok.. a lot of good stuff in it.. but also a lot of talking about "u just need to be true to yourself" kinda stuff in place of the normal snowboarders' hijinx that these movies normally have. at $0 entry i guess u get what u pay for =p
the weekly Hoy + Jmo outing was moved to thursday due to exams, and it shifted to outback steakhouse were we inevitably over-ordered and found ourselves struggling to finish =p we then headed off to watch this terrible Woody Allen movie on VHS! mostly cos it was the only VHS left anywhere in the world and any video store.
ive been out every nite this week.. and after i post this im going to go out to a pub crawl =p thats quite rare for me in the last 5 or 6 years since i became old. but its kinda funny that i dont feel social at all.. i just feel like this is being not-bored. its not really partying its jsut hanging out mostly.. which is more fun i reakon.. and less fakeness. partying is is artifical.. but i guess im just no fun at parties =p id much rather sit around in a small group on some couches in a quiet cafe around Surface Computing coffee table.
anyhoo.. is ne1 free to meet up for a quiet cup of tea? =)

everything i own in a box to the left.
this is a very late and thus will probably be the usual, long but half-assed post =p
so the big news is that my dad is retiring! he isnt 58 till nov, but because of annual leave and long service leave he can actually stop working somewhere about july and still get full benefits of being 60. i wont go into the intricate details cos its boring. but he is on the old system of superannuation which basically means he gets paid a % of his salary every year instead of what he's "saved" into super. his net salary each year will be more than me even when he is retired =p
this all wouldnt be much of a big deal really, since he is gov and doesnt work much anyway =p but it does mean my parents are selling the house. they plan to move into a small apartment in the city. i dunno why, but thats the plan. so im out on the street. but maybe onto the streets or japan or something. for a while ive been saying that if i moved out, i would move overseas. so heres my chance. am i gonna do something? or just wuss out like usual?
i also saw two movies, the first was Spiderman3 at iMax. it was ok depsite being predictable and a bit of a cheese-fest. i mean it was so clichéd that i was waiting for someone do yell "c'mon you can do it peter. you just have to believe in yourself". but then again i didnt really expect much from this other than sandman fighting spidey. in fact if the movie was just half an hour of that fight i probly wouldve enjoyed it a bit more =p ive also come tot he conclusion that iMax is just too big to watch movies on. we were in the last row and i still felt like i needed to take a few steps backwards to see everything without turning my head and going "what happend in that far corner of the screen which i wasnt looking at?"
i also went to see Tales From Earthsea, which is the new Ghibli movie. it was pretty much what i expected. it was better than Howls Moving Castle, but not by much. the story didnt make any sense, it was like all over the place. there were like some good concepts but they just didnt put it together than well. It wasnt all that bad.. but its certainly no Spirited Away.
.. later that day i went to Rosies bday thing at Putt Putt. we played 2 rounds of Extreme Putt Putt, which was basically starting from crazy spots instead of the regular tee. this was often off the plants and furniture or involved bouncing off object which were on another course =p i think we gave up scoring half way, but im pretty sure i was winning.
i havent had much frisbee lately except for training. but i did pick up a game in div4 and played shoeless =p i wasnt intending to play so i didnt have gear, i only picked up to make up numbers. No shoes frisbee isnt too bad, as long as you dont need to change directions. i did score on my first point on the field though =p
work has been deadly. well relatively...
it went down something like this:
boss: hey can u help these guys out? theyre project is behind
ian: ok, ive probly got a bit of spare time between my other projects.
project manager: we are 9 months into a 12 mth project and we've accomplished about 10% of the work.
ian: *roll eyes*
boss: worker1 and worker2 have been reassigned, so its just you and the PM now to do 10 months of 4 ppls work in 2 months.
ian: *roll eyes* oh well. at least im not in charge of this train wreck.
[last week]
boss: the PM has quit. so now you're in charge of this totally doomed project.
ian: *roll eyes*
in other news: lately ive had this bizarre fixation with the song Maria by Blondie. i think if my life were made into a bad 80s coming of age movie, then this would be the song in the credits. possibly with me (played by Kevin Bacon) walking home some quiet suburban street under a clear night sky.

*bends space and time with mind*
gah.. another week! time sure is flying. but alas not much has been achieved in the recently passed week. yesterday i went to frisbee to pick up the Spirit prize, which was a rather average looking face towel with nice embroidery of NSL Spirit Winners 2007. i also managed to watch the Woebags go from a score of 5-1 down to 6-12 in the div 4 finals! a rather poor second half to say the least =p i played a lil bit of shoeless pickup (in work clothes), it was fun, although i could only play at about 60% due to my various injuries which just got worse as i managed to cramp up both calves.. despite not really running or jumped at all. *sigh*
we are getting ever closer to obtaining a grad (yay). my boss is very slowly trawling thru a stack of 66 resumes to get a short list of interview-worthy candidates. a whole bunch get thrown straight out of they arent permanent residents (which u need to be to work at the govt). one guy interestingly had "other" under "are you a permanent resident" which is never a good thing =p
on the weekend i managed to make an arduous trip into the city (which took forever due to cityrail woeness) basically i left my house at 2pm and arrived in the city at close to 4pm. at one point i was on a bus which somehow "forgot" to stop at martin place.. and went onward to kings cross without so much as a peep from the driver. like it didnt even go near martin place, it missed it by 3 blocks. needless to say the passengers (including me) who wanted to get off at martin place were none too impressed.
daily stock check: +$414
